Same-day vs dedicated vs timed courier — which do you need?

Same-day, dedicated and timed courier services are not the same thing. Here is when each one is right for your business — with worked examples.

Same-day, dedicated and timed are three different courier services that people often confuse. Booking the wrong one for a critical delivery is expensive — sometimes catastrophically so — and the fix is understanding what each service actually promises.

Same-day courier

Same-day means the parcel is collected and delivered within the same working day, often with a soft "end of day" delivery promise. Bookings taken before mid-morning are usually delivered by close of business. The van may carry other jobs on the same run, which keeps the price down.

Use it for: ordinary urgent business documents, replacement parts where the recipient just needs it "today", trade counter transfers within a metropolitan area.

Dedicated courier

Dedicated (also called direct or exclusive) means a van is booked for you and drives door-to-door with nothing else on board. The clock starts on collection and does not stop for other jobs. Delivery is direct, so transit time is limited only by the distance and speed limits.

Use it for: AOG airfreight, line-down manufacturing recoveries, high-value goods, legal originals, medical urgents — anything where "with another parcel" is not acceptable.

Timed courier

Timed means the parcel is delivered inside a specific window — pre-9am, pre-10:30am, PM, or a bespoke 2-hour slot. Timed is not necessarily same-day: most timed bookings are actually next-day with a guaranteed window. The value is predictability at the delivery end, not raw speed.

Use it for: stock replenishment to a shop that opens at 10am, a legal filing with a court deadline, a customer expecting a delivery before a scheduled installation.

Worked examples

  • A brochure needs to be with a marketing agency in London by end of Tuesday: same-day.
  • A CT scanner PCB needs to be at Guy's Hospital before 08:00 tomorrow: timed pre-9am.
  • A gearbox is needed at a truck workshop within the next four hours or the vehicle sits overnight: dedicated same-day.
